WOMEN IN BUSINESS

If we were to talk about the greatest revolution of mankind in the past century, it would certainly be the shift in people’s mindset. Women make half of the earth’s population. However, up to a few decades ago, half of the world’s potential was being left untapped under the conservative mindset. Things have changed now!

Here’s one very successful woman for you.

Mary Barra

The mid-twentieth century brought this world a lot of successful women. Mary Teresa Barra is yet another name among the many. Mary Barra is the CEO of the very well-known American automaker General Motors.

Mary was born on 1961 in Michigan to a mediocre family that knew no better about the accomplishments Mary was set to reach in her life. A graduate from the former GM Institute, she went to enroll in MBA under GM scholarship.

Mary found her way into the company back when she was 18 years old as a co-op student. There, she gained experience in a variety of different positions as her job rotated a lot. One day, she might be assigned an engineering job, while on the other, Mary would be performing an administrative task behind the desk.

It was the sheer merit and desire to show her capabilities to the world that got her the co-op in the first place. Most people would collapse if rotated to an excessively annoying extent, but then again, most people are not Mary Barra.

She continued to put in great effort into her work which led her to acquiring the position of Vice President of Global Manufacturing Engineering in the year 2008. By the time she took hold of the job and got fluent with the routine, she was switched to VP of Global Human Resources in 2009. As if things weren’t difficult enough, in 2013, she was also handed over the responsibility to manage the Supply Chain and Global Purchasing Department.

Soon, she was promoted as the CEO of GM which made Barra one of the most successful women in the world right now. Her capabilities were put to test the very first year as CEO when a major flaw in the automobiles was found and she had to call in a staggering 30 million cars. This was one of the most crucial times in her career. Mary even had to testify in front of the court and explain the reason why such a major call was made.

There were a lot of speculations that came around that time. People accused not only the CEO, but the company itself for its practices. Mary kept her nerve and addressed each situation in the best possible manner. She has made several major, yet successful calls since then. She has appeared several times in Forbes as one of the most powerful and successful women on earth.
