The Age of Now
Celine’s creative director Phoebe Philo makes sense of serious style
Phoebe Philo continues to keep things real no matter what rabbits her fashion peers are pulling out of the hat. We’re talking handsome coats with elongated waists, drop-crotch trousers and sartorial staples that will last and last.
There were however, a few surprises though. The leather lace-trimmed lingerie slip raised quite a few eyebrows, rousing sentiments that perhaps, just perhaps Philo might be joining the fold of theatrical fashion. Then there were the exaggerated puff sleeves that Rei Kawakubo would approve of. How very artfully constructed they are. The Jean Paul Gaultier-esque rib-knit waist detail was certainly unexpected though thoroughly welcomed for mixing things up.
Is Philo turning her back on timeless classic or is she just letting her hair down in time for Spring? “It’s about taking her out of urban life and putting her feet on the sand,” the English designer explains. “I thought if you were travelling for a year, what would you need to take with you.” Sensible separates and a few conversation starter pieces, of course.
